I recommend synthetic blend motorcycle only oil. It
is expensive (5.95 a qrt) but it resist heat better than
regular oil. Heat can be a problem with the savage as
it is only air cooled. I use two quarts when I change
the oil. The manual says 2-2.5 qurts but I found that
two much oil tends to blow back into the air filter
box. (by the way..does anyone know why oil breather tubes
are always routed back to the air filter? Seems like a dumb
way to route it.) I you change your oil often it probably is
okay to use off the shelf pep boys oil, but I need my bike
every day and for long distances so I don't take a
chance.
